David Peckinpaugh is
the main Wenzel Coaching cycling coach for the New England area. David
is strong in both education and experience, with a Master's Degree in
Exercise Science with a concentration in Exercise Physiology and 14
years of racing experience. He is also an American College of Sports
Medicine certified Health/Fitness Instructor, and a Certified Strength
and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and
Conditioning Association. Dave combines these professional and
educational credentials with his on-the-bike experience to offer a
blend of current scientific training techniques with "real-world"
application, building a bridge from the lab to the races. He is
currently working as a lecturer for the University of Massachusetts
Amherst Kinesiology Department teaching classes in Strength and
Conditioning, Exercise Testing, and Personal Training.
As a coach, Dave strives to help athletes achieve both balance and
consistency in their racing and training. To enhance performance, it
is vital to balance intense training with recovery as well as personal
life and athletic goals. Equally important is the idea that training
and development must be consistent and purposeful if an athlete hopes
to attain their goals. Dave strives to treat all clients with the same
respect and careful attention whether they are a fitness rider,
developing racer, or elite athlete. His enthusiasm as a coach allows
him to help clients work through difficult times as well as celebrate
success.
Dave has been successful working with cyclists from beginning riders
to experienced racers in road racing, mountain biking, cyclocross, and
general fitness. As a father of two, Dave understands the difficulties
faced by many cyclists struggling to balance their jobs, family, or
school with their racing goals and can offer advice based on personal
experiences. Additionally, he has a great deal of experience
developing exercise prescriptions for athletes and individuals with
controlled disease (such as Type 2 Diabetes or Hypertension). Dave has
helped many individuals improve various aspects of the overall health
and fitness such as weight loss or improving their daily diet.
His own racing career began on the road, racing both USCF and
collegiate events including the Collegiate National Championships.
Dave has also competed in mountain bike races and, more recently, his
racing focus has turned to cyclocross and other endurance events.

Wenzel Coaching "Coach of the Month," January
2008
"Dave has been a great asset keeping me focused on the big picture,
as well as smoothing out the highs and lows inherent in any long term
training program. The weight loss for me was somewhat remarkable...
I'm actually lighter than when I graduated from high school 33 years
ago." ~Don
"David has been incredibly patient and thorough with
his explanations and direction. Although I am a relatively new client
of Wenzel coaching, I am very pleased with his service thus far and
look forward to continuing with Wenzel for many months to come."
~Anthony
"I competed in seventeen races as a master 55+ racer
last season, and crashed in late August during an endurance ride the
weekend before my most important race of the year. I was off the bike
for 3+ months...Dave has done an excellent job in tailoring my program
to accommodate my injuries and lost fitness, encouraging me and
emphasizing how I must be patient....my fitness is slowly starting to
return. I had my best year racing in 2007 (my first year with Dave as
my coach), and with Dave's coaching, look forward to an even better
year in 2008." ~Will
"David was great. He was very
involved and accessible. I think he went out of his way to talk things
over and encourage me." ~James
