Coach James Karthauser of
Kerrville, Texas lives in what could be a training mecca in the US:
Warm winters and vacant roads over rolling hills make it a great place
to live and ride a bicycle, and he has spent more than 15 years
coaching riders along those roads and in competitions in the US and
Canada.
James has been a public school teacher in the field of science for
over 25 years, putting to use his master’s degree in education in both
his teaching and instructing cyclists.
In addition to his formal training, James holds a USA Cycling Elite
Coach license, as well as road and mountain bike racing licenses, an
official’s license, and a mechanic’s license. He also remains involved
in the top levels of direction in US cycling by working as the Central
section Trustee on the board of USA Cycling..
James has worked with the USA Cycling Regional camps for over 12
years, and has taken 10 teams to the Tour de l’Abitibi in Quebec,
the only UCI World Cup race and most prestigious stage race for
juniors in North America. In 2005, he was chosen “Director Technique
par Excellence” there in recognition of his coaching and directing
abilities. He has also taken athletes to Germany.
James has worked with several athletes who have gone on to represent
three National Teams. While he has specialized in coaching juniors, he
is qualified and experienced in coaching most levels of cyclists. He
has coached women’s and collegiate teams.
James believes that anyone can improve, and uses his experiences from
his own busy life to help cyclists with full time jobs reach their
highest potential. He feels that proper rest and recovery are key
ingredients to success, and that cycling can and should be developed
as a “life-long” sport. He notes that most of the athletes that he has
coached over the years are still actively racing today, a fact in
which he takes great pride.

"I have read every book on training and they are great
as far as it goes, but they are not specific enough to apply to
individual training. With James, it's like he's there with you helping
you achieve your training goals. I'm 54 years old and this is the best
damned thing that's ever happened to me. I'm already getting better
and this is the most fun I've been allowed to have since I was a kid.
I'm lovin' it ... I've notice that to get my hr to the right zone, I'm
in a gear that's about two sprokets higher than I used to use ... This
is great. I'm feeling great. I'm having so much fun now. Thanks so
much!!" ~ Mendell Patton
