John O’Brien’s approach to coaching is formed by 15 years of race experience, his love for all aspects of of cycling, and a passion to help others reach their goals. Through an effective training program, John managed a busy race schedule while executing the responsibilities of a corporate career. Although already in the masters age group (35+) upon entering the sport and despite the many demands on his time, his dedication, focus and time management earned him Category 2 status.

John's participation with a strong masters team in challenging stage races such as the Cascade Classic, Elkhorn Classic, Walla Walla and the Mt. Hood Classic, as well as numerous state championships, has taught him the value and specifics of that teamwork. Although his strength is the individual time trial, John finds equal satisfaction in contributing to well-executed teamwork. He's experienced first hand that rarely does an individual win a major race; an understanding and appreciation of tactics and strategy are keys to success. He takes more pride in having helped team mates win several State Championship races than the silver and bronze medals he earned in the process.

John left a successful career as a regional sales manager to dedicate his full attention to coaching and fitness training. He believes the balance of many complimentary facets of a training program contribute to improved performance and a successful race season. These include strength training, flexibility, proper nutrition, understanding tactics and strategy, mental training, bike handling skills, and recovery, in addition to the more obvious time in the saddle. Structured Periodization in training -- progressing different skills and strengths throughout the year -- is as important as the flexibility to adapt, modify plans and calmly accept the inevitable surprises and interruptions life throws at you.

As a Certified Sports Nutrition Specialist, John helps clients reach and maintain appropriate weight, a crucial aspect of cycling success. An increased power-to-weight ratio through improved body composition is of great benefit to the cyclist at any level, in addition to improvement in overall health.

Recognizing that current research constantly changes our understanding of sports physiology, sports nutrition and training methodology, John continues his personal education on an ongoing basis, absorbing knowledge that will help his clients, whether their goal is a national championship or completing a century ride. John’s training in fitness and coaching includes:

Certified Personal Trainer, National Academy of Sports Medicine
Certified Sports Nutrition Specialist, National Federation of Professional Trainers
Licensed Cycling Coach, USA Cycling
Certified Spinning Instructor
Certified YogaFit Instructor

John lives in Ridgefield, WA with his wife Andy and their dogs, Sig and Mabel (plus Andy’s sheep, turkeys and chickens). When not working out, racing, or coaching clients, John enjoys practicing yoga, reading, cooking, and watching movies with Andy.
