Kathleen
McCormick of Walnut Creek, CA leads by example. She began her
“athletic career” 13 years ago in order to keep up with her husband
and stay in shape after having kids, but what started out as a means
to an end became a new beginning and passion. Herself a “late
bloomer”, Kathleen believes that it is never too late try something
new or break out of a comfort zone. She coaches beginners and seasoned
athletes in triathlon, running and cycling, with specialties in trail
running and ultra endurance events.
Kathleen’s
coaching career began at the local club where she taught spin and core
classes. As the run coach for the club’s beginner tri training
program, Kathleen encouraged many tri newbies in accomplishing
something they never thought possible, and in the process faced her
own fears of riding a bike and swimming in open water. Kathleen
went on to help coach a beginner’s metric century training program and
has been passionate about cycling ever since. Kathleen has since
helped scores of riders and racers achieve their goals in running, cycling
and triathlon. She is a certified personal trainer and group exercise
instructor, USA Cycling Level 2 coach, a Heart Zones Blue Jersey Master Trainer,
and is advanced certified in stability ball/core training.
Kathleen
has always impressed upon her friends and fellow athletes that if “she
can do it, anyone can do it,” remembering how hard it was just to
start training for something new. By encouraging and mentoring a few
friends in reaching the finish line of their first marathon, Kathleen
discovered that not only did she enjoy training, but that she was
passionate about coaching others in reaching their goals.
Kathleen
started out road running and training for all distances including
marathon, but has since fallen in love with the scenic trails and now
enjoys ultra running and competes in distances up to 50 miles, usually
placing among the top overall female finishers.
Cycling
has become an integral part of Kathleen’s training program and in the
last 3 years she has completed the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, the Death
Ride, the Mount Diablo Challenge and has even climbed up L’ Alpe de
Huez. To further challenge herself and break out of her cycling
comfort zone, Kathleen joined the Pegasus/Vandenburghe Properties race
team and now participates in local races.
Kathleen’s
coaching philosophy is built upon the following: purposeful training
vs. working out; balanced programming that is fun as well as
rewarding; workout progression and periodized training; quality
workouts, not quantity; and the benefits of training with a heart rate
monitor
Kathleen
resides in the Walnut Creek area of the Easy Bay with her husband and
two children. She continues to lead group half marathon training
programs, heart rate monitor training workshops, and also works
closely with the Wellness Community Strides for Hope Marathon Training
Program.
“The miracle is not that you finished; it's that you had the courage to start.”

"Kathleen is an AMAZING coach. She has helped me get from someone
with an insane fear of bikes to riding on the road in traffic with no
fear -- she instills confidence without being too overbearing, and is
honest about my skill level and where I need to be while still
focusing on how far I've come. She's fantastic and a real asset to
your company."

"I would like to nominate Kathleen McCormick for Coach of the
Month. Kathleen has put together my training program for Wildflower
Triathlon ... and is also our leader for the Links for Life/Endurance
Multisport Connection. She is so passionate about what she does. She

"Hi Kathy and Laurel,
Thank you both for your support and encouragement for a great training
program leading up to the Wildflower. I was thrilled to have reached
my goal of finishing around 3 hours and some seconds 13/88 in my age
group. I am super excited to reach my next goal of getting stronger on
the bike. I know it will take some hours and pain, but I am ready!!
Thank you." ~ Kim Helgans
