Dear Kendra,
September is a
month of transition. Some athletes are resting,
some in colder climates are stretching their late
summer fitness, and many are gearing up for
cyclocross or a fall triathlon. Your end-of-season
rest period is the one of the best opportunities
to take the time to really plan your race goals
for the following year. Assess your 2007 summer
season with your coach now and start outlining
your attack on 2008.
If you're revving up for cyclocross, check out
this month's article on
dismount technique
to refine your transitions on the bike. Speaking
of transitions, look for a new web site for Wenzel
Coaching in the next month or so. Our new design
will be the start of a more interactive and
informative site. We are also looking for fresh
photos of our clients in action. If you have a
recent photo of you in a race please send it, and
if we use it in a newsletter or the site we'll
take $5 off your next month of coaching. See below
for details.
As always, you'll find the Resource of the Month,
the Quote of the Month and the Power Tip of the
Month below.
We welcome your feedback. Please write to
newsletter@wenzelcoaching.com
or call 503-233-4346 with your comments, race
stories and ideas.

Resource of the Month: What is Your "Real
Age"?
It
is commonly said that you are only as old as you
feel. There may be some truth in that. A new
life expectancy calculator takes into account
all facets of your lifestyle to calculate the "real
age" of your body. So it appears that the days
spent riding the bike for hours, eating right,
weight lifting and being health conscious do make us
"younger."

Power-Training Tip of the Month
Use your power meter to refine your race tactics.
Examine the power files from your races for time
spent at zero power. More time spent not making
power is better. Winners often have in the vicinity
of 15-20% non-pedaling or soft pedaling time. If you
have more than that, you are probably riding
efficiently. If you have less, look for
opportunities to coast in your next races. One
commonly missed coasting opportunity is as one rolls
up to a corner where riders will brake. Rather than
pedaling up to the moment when you brake, start
coasting a moment sooner and end up in the same
place with less effort.
