Training and Coaching Philosophy
We believe in
responsible coaching practices that center around sustainable athletic
development and the teaching of athletes to self-monitor their bodies.
We guide our athletes in identifying realistic goals and expectations
for themselves while encouraging them to seek and accept challenge. We
emphasize that the coach-athlete relationship is primarily a personal
relationship and that the written training plan is less valuable
without the interaction between the coach and athlete.
We provide training
programs that are based both on experience and science, using our own
experiences; that learned from our European peers; and the tested
knowledge of exercise science. We have access through our contacts and
our own coaches to the latest in cycling and other athletic
performance research and we take every opportunity to take advantage
of that knowledge as long as it fits realistically into the world of
training to perform e, and not just training to get higher test
results.
We are not as narrowly
science-focused as some of the other training programs available,
choosing instead to operate and market ourselves as a complete
coaching program. For instance, we refuse to overlook the components
of cycling “the game” for cycling “the physiology project,”
remembering that we are coaching cyclists to race or achieve their
specific riding goals, not just to score higher on strength and lactic
threshold tests. Heart rate monitoring, gearing, cadence, and
perceived effort are used primarily as our training directives.
Power-based training using wattage measuring devices can also be used
with our Custom programs and will likely be used in our other level
programs when the technology for measuring power becomes widely
affordable and reliable.
Specifically, all of
our programs focus on laying down a base of conditioning and fitness
for all the other training to stand on. Wenzel Coaching programs are
not entertainment-oriented programs with varied exercises strictly for
the sake of variety. Each exercise serves a performance related
purpose and improved performance is the true measure of success. For
that reason we always interview clients about their short and long
term goals and try to best persuade them to do their homework, the
base, before piling on intervals and other intensity, no matter when
they join the program. Cross training and strength training through
weights are also components of our programs.
The coaches who make up
the Wenzel Coaching network vary in the time they invest in coaching
and the sports and levels that they coach, but not in their commitment
to staying informed, delivering excellent advice, being responsive to
the needs of their clients and working as a team to pursue their own
goals as well as those of the organization. We will support coaches in
the pursuit of their avocation at whatever level they desire from part
time with just a few clients, to full time as a primary income source,
as long as they deliver quality service to the athlete-clients.
