Valerie Spees is one of
Wenzel Coaching’s most diverse coaches. She’s been a competitive
athlete in various sports for the past decade, as well as a
credentialed exercise physiologist for the past seven years. She’s
located in the heart of the Midwest and is available to all those
interested in running, road racing, and triathlon.
A star athlete throughout
high school, Valerie found her niche when she joined the rowing team
in college. Rowing through graduate school, she became half of a
lightweight double that went undefeated throughout the Midwest for two
years.
With the retirement of her
double partner in 2000, Valerie immersed herself in triathlon. Having
recently completed her graduate degree in exercise physiology, she
found herself to be the perfect guinea pig to test out the various
training theories she had just been taught. She excelled regionally
in sprint distance triathlon, while maintaining a full time job and
pursuing personal training and exercise specialist certifications.
Her particular specialties include integration of strength training
programs, recognition and prevention of overtraining, and injury
prevention and rehab.
Throughout the past five
years, Valerie has competed in many road races, time trials,
triathlons, running events from 5k to half marathon, open water
swimming competitions, as well as USMS swim meets. She recently
returned to school to pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy with
particular focus on biomechanics of movement. She and her husband
Scott have two young children that can typically be found sprawled out
in jogging strollers and bike trailers at local races on the weekends.
